The Great Fashion Fast of May Part II

I did it! I made it through the month of May without shopping for clothes. Factors contributing to my success include:

1. I’ve been super busy doing other things.

2. The students are gone so I’m not constantly seeing cute clothes I just “need” to own.

3. I’ve been less stressed which means less retail therapy and when I have been stressed I’ve just gone to the gym or to sleep.

4. I had fun remixing existing items. The day after laundry day is like opening a  new boutique in your closet.

5. The money I didn’t spend on clothes I spent on Carrie Underwood concert tickets, a haircut, and a few eating trips to Nashville culinary hotspots. So, did I “save” money—uh, no. I just repurposed it—Hey, back off. I’m a work in progress.

6. I went home and came back with 2 “new” bags from my mom’s baskets o’ purses and new perfume with matching lotion so I felt like I shopped without spending cash.

Now on to June…Let’s see if I can keep this up or least keep the shopping impact on my wallet low ;).

Oh, and I totally got rid of most of my TV stations yesterday…post coming soon!

Have you ever had an unread book on your shelf for a long time and for some unknown reason you pick it up one day, start reading it, and realize that the reason you didn’t read it before was because you weren’t ready to read it or didn’t need to read it until that VERY moment? That happened to me today.

God is the best librarian ever or better yet He’s better than AMAZON and their creepy recommendations.

Last year I was sitting in an apartment covered in boxes anxious but excited about my impending move to Nashville, TN and beginning a new job at Vanderbilt. Sad to leave my NC friends and praying that I would make TN friends. The drive from Durham to Nashville was incredibly beautiful in many ways and quite ugly in a few others. In the end, the move was a smart choice and I have no regrets. Nashville, TN has quickly become home and I look forward to creating happiness here for as long as God sees fit. To the concerts, the food, the fashion, and the bars, the Junior League, BBBS, and Cross Point Community Church, Delta Delta Delta, the ‘Dores and to all of the fantastic people that have made me feel like I belong. Happy 1 Year Anniversary to me and TN :).

MWF Seeks BFF or “How do I make friends?”

The Art of Friend Making has consumed my first year in Nashville. No one ever taught me how to make friends prior to graduating from my Masters program. I ventured to NC in 2007 w/o any friends and I would say left the state with 3 AMAZING friends but I met all of them through work at Duke. In planning my Nashville life I had a desire to do things differently so I began my friendship journey with meeting people outside of Vanderbilt and am only now venturing to make friends at work.

True Life: I’m a Joiner. I join things. I’m great at becoming a member. Therefore, I stepped into the Junior League of Nashville, Tri Delta Young Alumnae group, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cross Point Community Church where I serve as a First Impressions Greeter and a Co-Leader of a Community Group. I also frequented many Meet-Ups and YP Nashville events. Here I am a year later with a nice sized circle of friends that I can meet up for drinks, brunches, dinners, and other Nashville events. Some of them I know will become true BFF and others will probably remain really good Associates and I’m cool with that divide. A girl doesn’t need a zillion friends but the ones she does have must be legit ryde or die partners in crime ;). Thick as thieves, I say, thick as thieves! Oh, did I go to Real Housewives of New Jersey on you? My bad :(.

The book above chronicles one woman’s search for a BFF in the city of Chicago. She suggested a few tenets that I had already taken to heart but it was nice to feel affirmed in my tactics.

1. Never decline an invitation. God knows, just go to events. If someone wants you there then you should be there. Maybe I support that due to the southerner in me as well.

2. If you meet someone you click with then get their contact information. “Can you slide me your digits?” If that is too awkward get an email address. If nothing else, find out their last name. There are 8 million women named Katie in the world. Good luck finding the one you want on Facebook!

3. Follow Through and Follow Up! If you say, “we should totally get together” then follow up and make a plan. Most people don’t think folks are genuine when they throw that offer out there so think how surprised they’ll be when you actually reach out to make that happen. If you had a great time on your “friend date” then make sure that keep in touch and set up another outing. Consistency is key to making a great friend.

4. Join clubs, organizations, classes, groups. This is the easiest way to meet folks. Take the plunge and go places by yourself. You’ll be surprised that if you keep an open mind and demeanor the people you can meet. Nashville does a great job of catering you Young Professionals so look out for those opportunities in your area.

5. Once you meet a nice amount of folks then do something to bring them all together. I held a happy hour on my birthday and invited all of the lovely ladies I’ve met thus far and I had a small dinner that weekend with 6 awesome women who got along really well. Score!

6. Map out your connections. Think about schools you’ve attended, places you’ve worked, causes you care about and look for ways to reconnect with those areas of your life in your current city. I just had lunch with a W&M alumna and I reconnected with my sorority. If you have friends that have connections in town don’t be afraid to ask them to hook you up.

This is one area of life that I was super unprepared for in life. I’ve always been “popular” and didn’t have to work too hard to make friends. Hmm…that sounds really arrogant but it is the truth. Consult my yearbook!

Be brave! Everyone wants someone else to plan their social life. Put some invites out there and I promise you that you’ll get a nice return on your invesment. Start with low risk activities such as lunch during the workday (for most of us that can only last about 1.5 hours) and happy hours (alcohol makes socializing easier and almost anyone is awesome after a margarita).

Oh, also note that you won’t click with everyone. Totes fine. Brush it off and on to the next!

Have fun!

I’m “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood

Carrie’s new album “Blown Away” is well, it is Carrie Underwood. She has stayed quite true to herself and rightfully so because, well, it works. Who doesn’t love Carrie Underwood? I mean, even if you don’t love her, you can’t really hate her because she CAN actually sing. That’s rare these days,my friends. If you don’t think she can sing then you need to find her rendition of “How Great Thou Art”. Then grovel for her forgiveness ;).

She debuted “Blown Away” at last night’s Billboard Music Awards and “Good Girl” is her first single from the album. Neither of these songs is my favorite. That honor goes to “Good in Goodbye” for personal reasons.  ”Good Girl” is a reissue of “Cowboy Casanova” and “Last Name” from previous efforts and it is certainly a safe first single for Carrie. WIth pipes like hers I don’t think she needs to be safe which is why I’m happy that she went with “Blown Away” for the BBMA.

Her songs are about the usual country topics including love, death, love after death, death caused by love gone wrong, love of oneself, unsuccessful love, running from love, love of life, and love of where you’re from. So yeah, she’s got every angle of love covered. I’m good with that because she sings it so darn well.

Surprisingly, she delivers island flavor on “One Way Ticket” as she instructs us to tell our boss to “stick it” and to take the lollipop of life and “lick it”. This song is the country version of “The Motto (YOLO)” by Drake and Lil’ Wayne. The Dixie Chicks would be proud of “Two Limousines” as it is the 2012 version of “Goodbye Earl” but much more haunting and I imagine a dramatic video with lots of black hats and rain. “Blown Away” is a powerful ode to revenge in an Oklahoma town. I do wonder about the back story of this song. She blows the vocals for this track out of the water and shows you why she is the most successful American Idol.

“Leave Love Alone”, “One Way Ticket”, “See You Again”, and “Do You Think About Me?” are my favorite ride along songs. “DYTAM?” makes me smile the entire time—listen to the song lyrics and you’ll start grinning too.

I skip over a few of the tracks including “Forever Changed” , “Cupid’s Got a Shotgun”, and “Who Are You?”  Regularly, I will listen to 8 of the songs off the album. 8/14 ain’t bad.

My hope is that I will score tickets to see her live.  I’m a fan of Underwood—not just her music but her classy self from Oklahoma. I took a break from the awful display of the downfall of the music industry, also known as the Billboard Music Awards, and watched her and her hubby on Oprah’s Chapter 2. I was taken by her grace and humble nature. She’s a believer in Christ and it is evident in how she lives and her relationship with the gorgeous hockey player. Go Preds!

I’m happy I spent the $9.99 on this album. This is not my favorite Carrie Underwood album but I’m supportive of the effort.
