Progress in the Wilderness with Salt Water

I haven’t touched my blog in a while but I decided to look at my 101 in 1,001 list and found that I could cross off a few new items and add progress updates to many others.

I’m a woman who loves crossing items off a list.

Check out the list here and tell me your thoughts about what I should add. I don’t have 101 items just yet.

Since my last post I feel like a lot has happened but as my pastor said last night, “God takes you to the wilderness when he wants your undivided attention.” I’m trying my best to refocus my energy.

I get to end August with a trip to the beach and I have never looked this forward to putting my feet in the sand. As they say, “Salt water is the cure for everything…”.

That’s all for now. Enjoy your evening.

State of Affairs

So, I haven’t blogged since July 6th.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk and I have not felt like “Krystal” these days. I figured I needed to calm down a few things in my world including blogging. I enjoy this experience and have had a huge amount of fun sharing my adventures with y’all. Blogging is a personal investment and I’d like to share the genuine state of my life with you all. Obviously, it is harder to share when you’re not sure you like who you are at the moment.

Don’t worry, I haven’t kicked a puppy or slashed anyone’s tires. I’ve just done, thought, and said a few things that aren’t truly reflective of who I think I am as a person. Perhaps, I’m wrong and I actually am that person. If that’s the case then I need to do some work to accept my new reality.

Life is still happening but I’ve chosen to step back from a few things as I’ve conducted my Summer 2013 Life Audit. I’ve disconnected with some people and activities that are starting to feel like burdens. I’m still in the process of examining a few other involvements to determine whether or not I should continue in my role.

I’m looking for my happy and what I thought was making me happy when I moved to Nashville in 2011 is now exhausting. What I value has now reached a critical point and is actually starting to become detrimental.

Okay, so there you go. Don’t worry–I’m working everyday, still hanging out with friends, going to concerts (waiting for Luke Bryan tickets as I type), serving as a residential tourist of Nashville, and my outfits are getting better and better including this $11.00 skirt I’m currently rocking from Target. I’ll catch you up on specifics when I feel more like sharing.

Thanks for reading.

Excuse Me….

My apologies for the hiatus but I am off being a Friend of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

I don’t do “Greek” day to day anymore BUT I do believe that the experience is beneficial to those who do it right. I believe in it and because of that I will continue to support fraternities and sororities in various ways including by serving as a facilitator for experiences like the Wooden Institute. Tis an honor and I’ m happy to have been invited :).

I shall return to blogging duties on Thursday or Friday of next week. Don’t miss me too much!

To Be Known & To Be Loved

Pastor Pete Wilson slays the pulpit on a regular occasion. You can find him most Sundays at Cross Point Church whether in person at the Nashville Campus or on a screen at the other 4 locations in TN. If you’re not in TN or just want to chill on your couch while you commune with Jesus, you can check him out online. You really don’t have any excuse to not listen to this message as I have also included a link to it in the post.

Week 5 of Cover to Cover

A few high points for me from this message:
– Yes, cats are going to Hell. Sorry, I don’t enjoy them.
– When I thought of the most beautiful person I’ve ever met it was someone that I thought my heart let go of a long time ago. Darn!
– Happiness is not based on ignorance, but rather it is based on perspective. It isn’t that I “don’t know” or “shouldn’t know” about my circumstances, but instead I should change my way of thinking about my current situation. I should be in the business of choosing joy regardless of what’s happening around me because God trumps ALL.
– Revelation in 3 words: GOD WILL TRIUMPH! Amen!
– Heaven is= A resurrected life in a resurrected body with a resurrected Christ on a resurrected Earth. This world is our home because God is going to heal this world and make it into the place he originally meant for it to be when he created it and put Adam and Eve on Earth.
– The three things we desire:
1. An intimate relationship with God- The concept of inconsolable emptiness is why no matter what I do, I am always unfulfilled. More of nothing (clothes, money, trips, accolades) never fills the void. When will I fully grasp that I have to stop spending to collect more stuff that only makes me feel “better” for a day or so. God satisfies and nothing and no one else can or ever will achieve that goal. We were made for another world.

CS Lewis quote

2. A purpose to live out–I never thought about “the curse” changing the nature of work. We will still work in Heaven but we will have a purpose that will fulfill us and put all of our strengths to use. Work will no longer seem like a burden and we won’t have a case of the Mondays.
3. Untainted Community with no hiding or secrets- We all want to be loved. We all want to be loved for who we truly are and not for the disguise we wear everyday to hide whatever flaws we’ve assigned to ourselves or allowed society to assign to us as we moved throughout this world. We want to be known and loved unconditionally. No judgment, no fear, and no pretense. This is me “naked” like Adam and Eve were literally and figuratively in The Garden of Eden prior to “the curse”. Actually, living the slang of “keeping it real” and not worrying about losing those who “love” you. Our greatest fear, according to Pete, is to be known and not loved. Unfortunately, that is too common of an occurrence. People show up as their true self and we turn our backs, we move away from them so that we don’t “catch” whatever ill we think they have. My friend Darren often uses this Maya Angelou quote,

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

This describes the untainted community. You really know me and you really love me. I don’t have to hide from you or “keep up with the Joneses” for you to appreciate me. I’m not afraid to discuss my woes, shortcomings, and downright failures. We have learned to walk around with a mask and for many of us that mask is what we think everyone else wants to see. I haven’t lost faith in humanity and I’d like to think that there are places in this world where you can “do you” but one has to be willing to take the risks to reveal themselves and be vulnerable. Just know, that whatever happens, God is there with you always. Just because I write a blog doesn’t mean that anyone knows me any better. I write this stuff for you just as much as I write it for me. Everyone’s got their stuff and I ain’t no exception. I just happen to have some pretty dresses to cover it all up as I prance off to work in the morning.

I strongly encourage you to watch the message and make a visit to Cross Point one Sunday. I’d love to see you there.

Red, White, & Blue–Happy 4th of July!

Had so much last week styling Chambray themed outfits that I had to come back for Red, White, & Blue. This happens to be one of my favorite color combinations and when I was in my Tommy Hilfiger phase, I probably wore these three colors everyday of the week. The 4th of July is upon us and I have fond memories of watching fireworks on my aunt’s patio. I went to college in Colonial Williamsburg so 4th of July is a big deal. The colonists would come out in full force with an incredible fireworks display, fife and drum band, and an authentic celebration of America’s independence. I then had the amazing fortune of celebrating a few summers in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. Needless to say, I have high standards for 4th of July celebrations. This summer, I’ll be celebrating with friends and watching some fireworks in downtown Nashville. How are you celebrating our nation’s birthday? Whatever you do, don’t forget to honor our nation’s troops. God bless the men and women who continue to fight to preserve our freedom. My dad was in the Army and my brother in the Air Force–I have great respect for the Armed Forces. America ain’t perfect, but she’s my home. I’m proud to be an American.

Check out my Red, White, & Blue (and Camo) below:

Psst…

Do you know about these things?

House of Cards on Netflix

If you have Netflix, then you’ve got to watch House of Cards. A friend of mine mentioned it in conversation and I spent the next two days watching Season 1. Kevin Spacey, politics, Robin Wright, scandal, Kate Mara, murder, intrigue, intelligent dialogue, southern asides, sex, suspense, and whatever else you need to make one helluva show. Get into it! Season 2 is in production. You have time to catch up on this gem.

Ruby Amanfu

Ever heard, Jack White’s “Love Interruption“? The female voice belongs to Grammy Nominee Ruby Amanfu. You might have seen her perform with Mr. White on the Grammys. Perhaps you saw her perform as a part of “The Collective” on The Singing Bee or are a fan of Sam & Ruby. She performed at this weekend’s Musicians’ Corner and she didn’t disappoint. Her voice is soulful, soft, and powerful all at the same time. This was her first solo performance in 10 years! I really hope I don’t have to wait that long to see her again in concert. I was also quite giddy that she favorited and replied to my tweets (squeal). Follow her @RubyAmanfu.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones

Another musical act that performed at the last Musician’s Corner of the summer. I’m a fan of “blue eyed soul”. These dudes from Birmingham light up the stage with their James Brownesque lead singer. He wails.

The Home T-Shirt

A cute shirt, with my favorite place on the front, and supports a great cause. That would be the Home T-Shirt. Wore it, posted a pic on Instagram and Facebook, and contributed to many new purchases. I’m a bit homesick and plans to return this month fell through :(. Oh, well I will be there again before I know it. Until then, I’ll just wear my home on my sleeve or rather my chest ;).

VA Home T

Riffraff

I’ve never been to Fayetteville, AR but my debit card has made the trip a few times. Check out RiffRaff! This boutique drew me in with the ability to order items directly from their Facebook Page. Over the course of two years the shop now has a gorgeous website. If you’re a Razorback Lover, these ladies always have the goodies for you. However, if you’re just a girl who loves fashion, check this place out. The owner is super precious and I’ve always received the best service. My two fave purchases include my red asymmetrical dress that I wore to an Ole Miss game and my flower bracelet in a golden color that is perfect for Vandy games.

Rejoice School of Ballet in Nashville, TN

The Junior League of Nashville does amazing things in the community. I’m honored to be a member of this organization. One of our partner agencies is the Rejoice School of Ballet. This school offers reduced price dance lessons (mostly ballet) to students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. A girl might pay $100.00 for what would typically by $1800.00 of dance lessons. The final recital was on Friday and I had to go and support these beautiful girls who have worked hard this summer to learn complicated ballet techniques. They were beautiful and I was moved to tears more than once by their radiance. God is so good! Programs like this are exposing girls to lives outside of their everyday world. It is giving them hope and letting them know that they can be ballerinas or whatever it is they choose to be. It isn’t where you’re from that determines your destiny. As someone who doesn’t come from money, I am always supportive of programs like Rejoice because things like this opened up entirely new worlds for me. If you’re looking for a new cause to support, I would strongly encourage you to donate to Rejoice.

That’s all for now. Hope you found something new :).

On Thursday, We Give Thanks.

I know that everyone is all about Throwback Thursday or #tbt but I’m more into Thankful Thursday.

This week I am thankful for a few things:

1. My car is back in my possession. I drove myself to work for the first time since Thursday.
2. A short jaunt to Atlanta with a brief stop in Chattanooga. Getting away is always a good idea.
3. The opportunity to serve as a Provisional Co-Chair for the Junior League of Nashville. Great opportunity to serve on Council and I’m really excited about working with all of the new members. Developing their Provisional Year Experience has been fun and fulfilling. My two other co-chairs are the perfect partners in crime.
4. Lots of free food opportunities this week. A free meal is like a magical unicorn. Tonight, I was able to go to Sunset Grill in Hillsboro Village. Voodoo Pasta and Butterscotch Habanero Bread Pudding= Yummy!
5. The over 40 people that liked “Peculiar Pearl” on Facebook. Thanks for taking part in my adventure. If you’re so obliged, please “Like” my page.

gratitude changes everything

Always good to take a moment to reflect on all the good happening in your life. What are you thankful for today?

Job Perk?!

For Monday and Tuesday my staff and my boss took a little trip to Emory University to meet with their Office of Student Leadership and Service Staff. Site visits are a great way to learn from peers in the field. As bonuses we were able to go to Chattanooga, TN and Atlanta/Decatur/Tucker, GA and there are some really cool people that work at Emory. All in all totally a worthwhile adventure. Learning and having fun while doing so is so the hottest thing on the streets. Get into it!

Here is a little photo journey of our trip:

Leon’s Full Service
Raging Burrito & Taco
Community Pie

Fun times and another kick in the face that we have a lot of work to do. Eek! However, we have great partners at a peer institution who want to help and that’s always a good moment. Relationship building is important and I’m amped to continue learning from Emory and perhaps one day we can teach them something. BTW, Emory is adorable–I neglected to get photos of our lunch location but if you ever get to visit pop over to the restaurant above their museum. Delish! There was also a really cool Farmer’s Market happening in the middle of campus. Confession: I’m a college campus geek.

The Mountain

My friend Dorothy Lou (Dorothy, Dottie, D Lou) has been asking me to visit her on the “The Mountain” since I met her in 2007. I politely denied her offer until a few weeks ago when I realized that she was moving to San Francisco. I’m in Nashville, TN and she was traveling from Raleigh, NC. 5.5 hours for both of us. After getting a few new tires, I jumped in my car and drove to Bryson City, NC.

She wasn’t kidding when she said that she lived on a mountain. My car found a new gear as we climbed to our destination. Bryson City is about 1.5 hours away from Asheville, NC. We were in the Nantahala National Forest which totally confused me on my iPhone.

There are places in this world that God made breathtakingly beautiful and this is one of those places. Green, is the word. The view from my room was spectacular and I enjoyed breathing fresh air and reading in the morning while Max, my new dog friend, scurried around beneath me keeping an eye on things. I arrived just in time for sunset and I knew that I was a goner. Sometimes you just need to get away and this entire experience was just what the doctor ordered.

DLou’s family is wonderful and they certainly embody the meaning of hospitable. It didn’t take me long to not feel like a “visitor”. There was tons of laughter, chatter, and delicious food. Cute kiddies running around, an adorable little town with places like Cork and Bean: Mountain Social House, Everett Street Diner, Humanite Boutique, The Chocolate Shoppe, and Madison on Main.

We hiked (eek!), decided not to go tubing (yes!), we dipped our limbs into Deep Creek (DLou just went for a full out swim), we visited Relay for Life at the local high school, had ice cream and pie before bed my first night in town, attended a family cookout, and had a grand time at the Nantahala Brewing Company.

I also happened to be visiting on Decoration Day. This was a new tradition for me and is only celebrated by a few areas within the Appalachian Mountains. Relatives celebrate this day of remembrance by decorating the graves of deceased relatives. It was moving to see people pay respects to their loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord. Even in the rain, people sang worship songs and heard the good word from a local preacher. The rest of the tradition involves gathering and eating till your belly is full.

I think I loved this trip so much because–in no particular order (a) I was able to catch up with Dorothy Lou after not seeing her for 2 years (b) The Mountain is gorgeous and is especially so when you get to drive around in a convertible with the top down (c) I felt like I was a part of this family and I think it takes special people to be able to make someone feel that comfortable in such a short amount of time–it takes big/good hearts (d) I was so out of my element and for the most part, except steep parts of the hike, I think I did well with sticking out like a sore thumb.

I really want to travel abroad but let me tell you, sometimes going 5.5 hours away from home gives you a cultural experience like you wouldn’t believe. I’m so thankful to have spent time in Bryson City, NC with DLou and her kindhearted, funny, and lovable family.

Now, I’m totally regret not going to the mountain years ago ;). smh

Thanks Dorothy Lou for the invite. Miss you, love you, and so proud of you!

Thanks for reading about my adventure.
