Why Don’t I Do That Anymore?

As I’m working on rediscovering my happy I have reflected on things that used to make me happy that for some reason I don’t do anymore. I’m sure at the time I had reasons for stepping away from that activity BUT now I just can’t seem to remember (is that part of the old age?) .

Thing 1: ZUMBA!
Thing 2: Style blogging
Thing 3: Serve on the First Impressions Ministry at my church
Thing 4: Scour the Internets for FREE things to do in Nashville and do them whether in a group or on a solo mission.
Thing 5: Plan random friend outings/hang out with a now 17 year old who made me giggle

In 2014, I’m going to attempt to work these things back into my life. Small doses at first and then I’ll take an internal assessment on how these past happies fit into my current life.

Happy Chart

What are some things that have faded from your life that might give you a happiness boost this new year? As I think more about this I realize that I loved doing these things because they made me love myself more. I liked me better when I was doing these things. Hmm…

Things I’ve Got a Big Crush on at the Moment

1. Quadron — Danish duo. Listen and fall in love. My fave songs: LFT, Hey Love, It’s Gonna Get You, Favorite Star, Crush, Befriend, Better Off, Sea Salt…wait, I’m naming the entire album. Just listen to “Avalanche” on Spotify.

2. “Adulting” by Kelly Williams Brown–So, remember the first time you read “Bossypants” by Tina Fey? You burst out laughing in a very quiet B&N and people stared at you so much that you felt it was only right to just buy the book and scurry away before someone called security considering that you’d gotten to the snorting level of your laughter which should really be preserved for private consumption. Okay, I guess that was just me. Well…the same happened with me and this book. Kelly Williams Brown has taken the word “Adult” and turned it into a verb. Being an adult is about how you choose to behave. She’s hilarious in a way that multiple parts of my identity greatly appreciate which means that she’s a bit crass and engages in “REAL TALK”. She gives you some steps to help you with acting as an adult but also makes sure that you know that you’re a grown ass person and you can do what you want. Just know that every choice leads to consequences. She’s got a blog. Read it: http://adultingblog.com/.

3. HuffPostWomen–I “Like” this page on Facebook and receive numerous articles throughout the day that serve as productive distractions (or so I tell myself). Check it out here and let me know your thoughts.

4. The Skimm–So, I’m not a big TV news watcher (I stand with Ann Curry) and I haven’t picked up a newspaper in ages. I mean, when I’m at home and the Sunday paper comes I still read The Comics, Parade, and The Daily Break. Does that count? No. I get most of my breaking news from the interwebs and as things become more and more complicated in my world and the world around me, I enjoy a cliffs notes version of what’s happening beyond Nashville, TN. I turn to The Skimm.

Now you know and knowing is half the battle. “G.I. Joe, American Hero”–wait, was that too much? Oh, well.

Firefly is my GI Joe name. Don't ask why I have a GI Joe name. We've all had previous lives.

5. ios 7–There, I said it. Come at me, bro! Love the look, the “remind me” feature on my phone, all the camera updates, and iTunes Radio. I mean, I love it because I can still call people (SHOCKER), text people, take pictures, get my email, and keep my calendar in the palm of my hand. I understand this means that I would be happy with the first iPhone ever made. Fine! All of y’all griping about it need to sit down. Talk about manufactured problems. Grr! Do you think Alex G. Bell ever thought this mess would be happening?!

Progress in the Wilderness with Salt Water

I haven’t touched my blog in a while but I decided to look at my 101 in 1,001 list and found that I could cross off a few new items and add progress updates to many others.

I’m a woman who loves crossing items off a list.

Check out the list here and tell me your thoughts about what I should add. I don’t have 101 items just yet.

Since my last post I feel like a lot has happened but as my pastor said last night, “God takes you to the wilderness when he wants your undivided attention.” I’m trying my best to refocus my energy.

I get to end August with a trip to the beach and I have never looked this forward to putting my feet in the sand. As they say, “Salt water is the cure for everything…”.

That’s all for now. Enjoy your evening.

LC Lauren Conrad -IFB Project #101- A Brand You Want to Work With

I am a blogger on a budget. You will not see me spending copious amounts of cash on clothing. I have to do more with less otherwise, I don’t eat very well. I am under the impression that you can do style without causing major drainage on your bank account. It is the person that makes the clothes and not the price of them. Now, there are times in my life where I have splurged and there are items on my wish list that are totally outside of my price range but I’m pretty controlled when it comes to making exorbitant fashion purchases. I think you have to pursue style in a healthy manner and not turn it into a source of financial stress. When it gets to that point then fashion is no longer fun and above anything it should always be fun.

The brand I would love to work with is a brand that is very realistic for me and one that I have admired for a while. I am also a plus-sized woman so I have to be loyal to brands that think about me as a woman with generous curves. LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s . Why do I love this brand? I love it because it is chic, easy, versatile, and it brings both the trends as well as classics to everyday people who don’t have a fat roll of cash to dedicate to fashion. The line also comes in a size 14/16. I’m also a fan of Lauren Conrad and the maven that she’s been able to become even after being away from our TV screens for years.

Kohl’s is always having a sale and LC Conrad always has a line that contains multiple must-have items. I know that I can go to my local Kohl’s, try on these items, and walk away feeling like I’ve purchased a piece of fashion that can be worn at work or play and I don’t feel guilty about the purchase. I own a nice amount of LC Lauren Conrad and the pieces have held up for years. My favorite pieces are my denim short and a long sleeved short two toned dress that I wear with wedges in the summer and tights and heels in the fall. I’ve also worn a dress from this line to a wedding and to a 30th birthday soiree at the swanky Carolina Inn.

I am 30 and these clothes are still age appropriate. I want to work with LC Lauren Conrad to show how these clothes work for a plus-sized and professional woman who is running around the city making moves on a daily basis. These clothes look expensive and they are on trend.

Here are some of my current favorite pieces:

LC Lauren Conrad Chiffon Shirtdress
LC Lauren Conrad Colorblock Maxi Dress
LC Conrad Boyfriend Blazer
Lauren Conrad Lace Satin Top
LC Lauren Conrad Platform Wedge Sandals

Thanks IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) for posting this challenge! I had to think quite hard about a line that really fit my season of life. LC Lauren Conrad suits the many facets of my life and allows me to continue to live my life in style while in the black.

Blogging Adventure

My blog is purely for fun and catharsis. I enjoy the process of writing Peculiar Pearl and am learning more and more everyday about the art of blogging. I’ve taken small steps with my blog but I must say it is strange sometimes to put your feelings on blast, especially to those readers that you actually know. It still surprises me when people say, “I read your blog.” The biggest surprise readers are certainly the 18-22 college students that I work with everyday.

My blog is connected to Twitter, LinkedIn, and I pin most of my entries to Pinterest. Depending on the post, I might link it on over to Facebook and those are certainly the days that I get the most readers on Peculiar Pearl.

I read a lot of blogs and many that I read have a Facebook Page specifically for their blog. So, I decided that I would do the same and see what happens. Check out “Blogs I Love”.

If you’re so inclined please “Like” my Peculiar Pearl Page.

It will be a place for my PP posts as well as other “in the moment” insights.

Thanks Y’all.
