LC Lauren Conrad -IFB Project #101- A Brand You Want to Work With

I am a blogger on a budget. You will not see me spending copious amounts of cash on clothing. I have to do more with less otherwise, I don’t eat very well. I am under the impression that you can do style without causing major drainage on your bank account. It is the person that makes the clothes and not the price of them. Now, there are times in my life where I have splurged and there are items on my wish list that are totally outside of my price range but I’m pretty controlled when it comes to making exorbitant fashion purchases. I think you have to pursue style in a healthy manner and not turn it into a source of financial stress. When it gets to that point then fashion is no longer fun and above anything it should always be fun.

The brand I would love to work with is a brand that is very realistic for me and one that I have admired for a while. I am also a plus-sized woman so I have to be loyal to brands that think about me as a woman with generous curves. LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s . Why do I love this brand? I love it because it is chic, easy, versatile, and it brings both the trends as well as classics to everyday people who don’t have a fat roll of cash to dedicate to fashion. The line also comes in a size 14/16. I’m also a fan of Lauren Conrad and the maven that she’s been able to become even after being away from our TV screens for years.

Kohl’s is always having a sale and LC Conrad always has a line that contains multiple must-have items. I know that I can go to my local Kohl’s, try on these items, and walk away feeling like I’ve purchased a piece of fashion that can be worn at work or play and I don’t feel guilty about the purchase. I own a nice amount of LC Lauren Conrad and the pieces have held up for years. My favorite pieces are my denim short and a long sleeved short two toned dress that I wear with wedges in the summer and tights and heels in the fall. I’ve also worn a dress from this line to a wedding and to a 30th birthday soiree at the swanky Carolina Inn.

I am 30 and these clothes are still age appropriate. I want to work with LC Lauren Conrad to show how these clothes work for a plus-sized and professional woman who is running around the city making moves on a daily basis. These clothes look expensive and they are on trend.

Here are some of my current favorite pieces:

LC Lauren Conrad Chiffon Shirtdress
LC Lauren Conrad Colorblock Maxi Dress
LC Conrad Boyfriend Blazer
Lauren Conrad Lace Satin Top
LC Lauren Conrad Platform Wedge Sandals

Thanks IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) for posting this challenge! I had to think quite hard about a line that really fit my season of life. LC Lauren Conrad suits the many facets of my life and allows me to continue to live my life in style while in the black.

Try mixing your prints and patterns.

Camo and stripes or polka dots and floral? Pick your poison.

Don’t be nervous. I received rave compliments from both outfits and I wore one to work and the other to church.

On Friday, I’m in Love

I’m spending Friday night in with me, myself, and I. Wasn’t my original plan BUT sometimes things just work out in a way that aren’t too bad. I still have two hours of Friday in Nashville and I am determined to keep this post out to you by the deadline.

So, what am I in love with today?

I did some cleaning of my apartment and rediscovered some items that make me smile.

1. KNC- I just really love my name. My first and last name are alliterative and it just rolls off the tongue. I was once told that I had the name of an anchorwoman. This compliment made me smile because that was my dream job when I was in high school. Anthropologie makes all sorts of letters for your home or office.

2. @ Bookend- So, you know in White Elephant how you’re not supposed to get upset if someone swipes your gift? Well, I got a little visibly peeved :(. I found this guy on my desk chair when I arrived at work the next day. I felt like a whiny baby, but I love this piece and I think it just made it easier for my co-worker to know what I wanted for Christmas that year. Check out Barnes & Noble for cool accessories.

3. Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington of Vogue and Relish by Daphne Oz. I love good reads. If you haven’t seen “The September Issue” then I suggest you watch it in order to understand the significance of Grace Coddington in the fashion world. Daphne can be seen daily on ABC’s The Chew.

4. Clutch or Pouch? I actually won a giveaway hosted by Back Down South . Diane E. Kelly makes these fantastic cork clutches with a football for the SEC girl in you, a fleur de lis, or this lovely starfish. Starfish Cork Clutch, $85.00–see me sport it below:

IMG_2311

Gap Pouch–love the color combination with the cool neutral gray and the neon pink. Can’t find this one online but there are a few different options and many are on sale.

5. Who doesn’t love red shoes? Who doesn’t love them more when they are wedges with bows? Picked these up from DSW. Moda Spana Holly Wedge Sandal, $29.94

That’s all for now.

The Issue

My obsession with fashion magazines has waned over the years, especially as Pinterest and Blogs have taken over when it comes to reporting the trends. I still pick up People’s Style Watch when there is a person on the cover whose style I admire. The June 2013 issue has Lauren Conrad on the cover. LC= Automatic Purchase! OBSESSED!

I went through the issue and picked out some looks that I want to try this summer. I love Lauren’s style because it is chic, feminine, simple, classic, and clean. She’s all about pretty dresses with neutral heels or skinny pants with a flowy blouse. She wears things that a person of my size can find, purchase, wear, and not feel uncomfortable. She’ll do color which is a huge must for me. Her Kohl’s line is accessible and accommodates a wide range of sizes.

Here are my selections from this issue:

My goal is to recreate these looks and then let you see the results. Now, I must admit for some of these pictures I just want the look, but not the exact items. I love the idea of a white dress with a summer bag and colorful flats. The dress that Olivia Palermo chose to wear, however, isn’t really my style.

This should add another level of fun to my shop less, do more philosophy this summer. Wish me luck!

OOTD

I have gotten back into the habit of posting my Outfit of the Day (OOTD) on Instagram (clarkkn). It is actually quite easy to forget to do this in the morning. This act helps me understand my closet and I haven’t shopped in quite a while as I’m intrigued by the new ensembles I’ve been able to create this summer with the items I currently own. As I’m working to become more fiscally responsible, I clearly understand that I must shop less and do more with less. A new season, some new hair, and a new perspective through the lens has helped make this process much less difficult. Bloggers always talk about “remixing” and “shopping your closet” and there are often positive outcomes that come out of these exercises. Blogs and Pinterest inspire my new outfits as I learn more about mixing colors and patterns. I’ve also become more comfortable with my body and that leads me to wear clothing in ways that I may never have attempted in the past.

I turned 30 in April and a part of me feels like I should dress in a more mature manner. I also just started a new position at work so perhaps that should also dictate the way in which I dress. Hmm…at the end of the day, I’m not a business suit sort of gal. I enjoy a colorful belted dress, a cardigan/blazer, a cute flat, and a killer scarf. I keep it colorful, approachable, fun, and professional with a slight twist.

I encourage you to go through your closet. The first day of summer is the 21st and it’s a great time of the year to reflect on your style.

Here are some tips:

-Toss those things that don’t fit or are beyond repair.
– Add a belt. If a belt came with your item then switch it out for a different belt.
– Mix patterns. Stripes/polka dots and leopard/polka dots are currently my favorite pairings.
– Try a different shoe. Add a fun flat or a good wedge.
– Throw on a brigh cardigan.
– Drape a scarf around your neck.
– Experiment with layers.
– If you usually tuck it, then don’t tuck it. If you usually button it, then try it unbuttoned.
– Carry a cool pouch/clutch instead of a traditional handbag.
– Add a fun piece of jewelry.
– Pin outfits that you like or rip pages out of a magazine. Recreate those looks and figure out what actually works for you.
– Make sure each of your pieces is versatile and can serve you in at least 2 areas of your life. I’m on a budget so I don’t have many “going out” clothes. I have clothes that can “go out” when I take off my blazer and add a heel instead of a flat. Versatility is key!
– Have fun! Care less about what others think. Fashion is fun :).

What are your tips when spicing up your wardrobe?

On Friday, I’m in Love

This week I’ m in love with…

Writing and receiving thank you notes. Make this a habit if you haven’t already added this practice to your life. Gratitude is the new black. They can totally match your style and personality since there are a huge variety available at all price points. I tend to collect them from Target, Paper Source, and Hallmark. Please know that you can make any blank card a thank you card simply by altering your personal handwritten message.

My new Kate Spade coin purse. I purchased it on a whim and it was on sale. I love the stripes and sometimes all you need are the essentials as opposed to the pieces of luggage I carry around called “purses”. Also, great color scheme so it is perfect for games in the fall :). Go ‘Dores!

The new Civil Wars song, “The One That Got Away“. Just listen. Also, if you ever have the opportunity please see them in concert.

Hoda Kotb and this picture of her displaying her love of Delta Delta Delta.

A good breakfast. Thanks Sky Blue Café. If you’re ever in town, check this place out for delicious food and a charming atmosphere. I chose to create my own omelet with spinach, cheese, and chicken. It was delivered with breakfast potatoes, a small cup of fruit, and one of the best biscuits I’ve ever eaten in my life. Yum! East Nashville does food well.

The new buddy comedy, The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. I was able to see a sneak preview and did nothing but belly laugh the entire movie. Love these two sharing the same screen.

HAIR!!!

I have felt a bit frumpy since I cut off my hair. I thought I wanted a short, cute, and “easy” haircut BUT I was sorely mistaken. I really tried to grow into loving it but the chemistry just wasn’t there this time. When I cut my hair in grad school, I was a different person and that version of Krystal rocked the short look with absolute confidence. It might have helped that I was also a few pounds lighter. After growing weary of looking at myself in the morning and of threatening to become a legit hermit instead of taking the time to do my hair in order to face the plethora of social outings that creep onto my calendar (not bragging, just telling the truth) I made the decision to invest in my hair by purchasing more hair. I ventured back into the world of braids after quite the hiatus (sophomore year of high school). I needed something easy, flexible, and since it is the summer something that would make it possible for me to actually enjoy the pool and not run screaming from water like I’m Gizmo, the Gremlin.

Now, I’m not a woman that has accepted the act of “going natural”. It still makes me a bit anxious, although I know that the concoction used to “relax” my hair is actually stressful and is doing nothing but damaging my hair and my scalp. Watch Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair” to learn more about what he calls “the creamy crack”. My real hair is currently quite unhealthy and the braids are providing it with a nice all expenses paid summer vacation.

I have micro braids and they took 11 hours. I used 3 bags of human hair 1B silky straight. Sometimes there were three women braiding my hair at one time. It hurt and I was exhausted by the end of my session but it was so worth it because these last few weeks have been absolute heaven. My prep time in the morning has been decreased by 30 minutes. I can do things with my hair that I could not do before–I actually went to the pool twice this weekend without hesitation. I can go to the gym without worrying about whether I’m going to have enough time to do my hair before I go to work. New hair also makes your clothes look new. I haven’t shopped because with the hair all my ensembles seem to have a fresh edge. I am actually unrecognizable to some people as my friends totally looked past me at church. I had to smile and wave for them to even know it was me.

I have been asked the following questions:
1. How long did that take? (11 hours) How did you sit there for that long? ( I read, slept, watched a couple lifetime movies, and had some conversations.)
2. Did your mom do your hair? (Uh, no. What?! I went to an African Hair Braiding Salon)
3. Wait, how did your hair grow that fast? (Really? I’m not a Chia Pet–it’s fake! )
4. Did your scalp bleed? (No, but it was sore.)
5. How long can your hair stay like that? (3-4 months)
6. Could I do that to my hair? (the answer depends on who asks the question)
7. Can I touch your hair? (Grr…I am not an animal at a petting zoo.)

Can someone please tell me the deal with wanting to touch African/African American hair?

All in all, I’ve had a great reception even from people who I never thought would compliment my mane. Hair is political and can lead to incredibly heated conversations. There are people who do not believe that my hair is professional, there are people who think that every woman should wear their natural hair texture and don’t understand why women still chemically straighten their hair, there are women who are horrified at the thought of wearing their kinky/curly all natural hair, there are people who still believe in the notion of “good hair”, and there are people who purchase hair and choose their own adventure without hesitation. Hair can be a topic that serves as a catalyst for larger race based conversations. I spoke with my 1st year hall mates a lot in college about the differences in our hair and I got a great laugh out of my suite mate who used my hair products (after being told not to) and the disastrous results. This building block led to deeper issues about race on our campus and even though sometimes those encounters can be exhausting they are often needed.

Funny how the grass is always greener on the other side. My white girlfriends always say “If I had your hair, I would wear an afro.” Meanwhile, tons of African American women are in the hair salon forcing their hair to be stick straight. The cultural norms that society has defined pushes people towards one end of the continuum or the other. I must confess that I was a bit worried about what “the bosses” would think of my hair. I work at a pretty conservative, private, and privileged institution in the south. I know the students will love it because they are cool like that, but I was a bit worried about some of my superiors. To my delight, I haven’t had any issues. In fact, they really like it.

I haven’t worn weave since my first year of college when I realized that my then boyfriend had never really seen what I looked like because I’d been wearing fake hair since we met each other. I was proud of myself for wearing my real hair and I was good with that until it started breaking off and there were crazy split ins, heat damage, and at home relaxers gone bad. I needed to not care so much anymore and braids were the answer to my prayer.

I must say that I feel more attractive. I feel more confident. I’m not worried about my hair all times of the day or night. I know that appearance certainly isn’t everything, but we’ve got to be realistic in understanding the role it plays in our everyday existence. My new hair has brought a new energy to my everyday that I desperately need right now.

Hair can be changed so easily. I have a friend whose hair is a different color every time I see her. I have another friend who loves wigs and switches them up depending on her mood. I also have a friend whose hair has been the exact same for over 15 years. Hair is so personal and since I don’t subscribe to the traditional professional way of dress for work–I don’t do oppressive business suits. I work with 18-22 year olds. My goal is to look classy, be comfortable, approachable, and perhaps have their parents think that I’m not a sophomore in college while adhering to my style. I also need to act on the same philosophy with my hair.

Tell me about your hair journey. Any fun adventures?

Jessica from DahliaLynn and Jessica from Here & Now have jumpstarted a new blogger adventure called BlogNashville. BlogNashville is a community for Nashville’s fashion and lifestyle bloggers.

Our first event, H&Margaritas was a grand time. We began the night at Chuy’s for delicious margaritas and then walked a few paces over to the grand opening of H&M in Opry Mills.

These ladies are not only quality bloggers but they are quality people. Laughter and chatter were a key component of the night. I’m not a hardcore blogger. I do this for cathartic purposes and to chronicle my life’s adventures. I have never set out to make money on this blog or to become famous. However, for those ladies that are able to do so, I give you much respect and I’m a fan. I have a lot to learn from these ladies as they are creative, strategic, and dedicated to the art of blogging. I’m happy to have spent time with them and I look forward to more events.

I think you’ll love their blogs.

On Friday, I’m in Love.

Here are seven things that are making me very happy these days:

1. Baggu for J.Crew — These adorable bags can carry up to 50 lbs. and the same amount of items as 3 grocery bags. It is guaranteed for a year. This bag was clutch for my Steeplechase survival kit and it matched my hat.

2. J. Crew Nautical Coasters — I am getting a “new to me” desk very soon and I want to make sure to not create any stains on the surface. I was in search of cute coasters and stumbled upon these while perusing J.Crew. Nautical designs always makes me feel like I’m on vacation and I certainly need that feeling at work.

3. Design Darling –This blog is adorable just like the creator, Mackenzie Horan. Horan not only authors the blog but she’s also the owner of a cute online boutique. I recently just purchased some monogrammed desk beauties and I’m super satisfied with her work and her customer service. My 101 in 1,001 list is inspired by her.

4. Inc. –In my ever present desire to develop myself as a professional, I often peruse Inc. for ideas, current trends, and general advice. Follow Inc. on Twitter (@Inc) for quick articles that will help you rethink your work.

5. Hybrid Her –Fashion for a cause. Hybrid Her has an amazing story and is all about the empowerment of women. I recently attended a trunk show benefitting Girls on the Run Nashville and picked up these adorable chevron bracelets and also grabbed a pair in polka dot.

6. Hunter Dixon by Hunter Bell –Do you watch Fashion Star? I could have bet my life savings on Hunter Bell winning the whole shebang. She’s mega talented and on top of that an absolute beauty. I dig her style. I enjoy supporting female entrepreneurs and she shared her story in an authentic way with the viewers. Congrats to Hunter on her win. I’m also a shameless fan of her mentor, Jessica Simpson. Now check out her clothes!

7. Paper Source — I enjoy a good greeting card. This place is a drug. I usually just go in for one card and I leave with entire sets of stationery, notepads, gifts for friends, and enough greeting cards for three families. Hopefully, you have one in your area. I needed Octopus based items recently and lo and behold Paper Source has a plethora of goodies for me to choose from.

Enjoy!
