On Thursday, We Give Thanks.

What am I thankful for this week?

1. Learning how to keep friends or rather how to maintain friendships. I don’t have any friends from high school that still play a role in my life and certainly not any pre high school days. It always amazes me how folks still hang out with people they knew when they were 15. I was so eager to “get out” that once I escaped I never looked back except for my family. I’ve been much better about this with my friends from college, graduate school, and North Carolina. The importance of friendship has become more relevant for me as I’ve gotten “older”. I’m thankful for that change and I hope that it continues. It takes work but it totally worth it. This smacked me in the face again during my trip to NC to visit my friend Dorothy Lou.

2. The nice people at the bank who helped me when there were fraudulent charges on my debit card. They were incredibly understanding and worked swiftly to help me out in this disconcerting situation. I felt supported. The banker also happened to be really cute but of course, he was married. They all are :/.

3. Simple things make me really happy. A good book, sweatpants, and a chair sounds like a fantastic weekend. In fact, I need more of these weekends.

4. My mom saw the benefit of “experiences”. She took us places as children and helped us understand how to behave in public and interact with others. We went to museums, the library, concerts, the circus, plays, and anything else that came to town that she could afford or just chose to believe she could afford. She also was the best field trip parent and always made it a priority to go along with us as we explored different places with our classmates. She later revealed how much she enjoyed watching me on field trips because of how I excited I became by all the details of history and science. I would follow the docent around rapt with attention on every word they said. I also really loved answering questions. Some things never change :). I’m a front row kind of gal.

I think about this whenever I hear my Little Sister say things like, “I’ve never been to an art museum.” or “I’ve never been to a play.” It makes me sad because those things always opened my eyes to the fact that the world was so much bigger than our apartment in Portsmouth, VA. It inspired me to “get out” and live a different life.

HAIR!!!

I have felt a bit frumpy since I cut off my hair. I thought I wanted a short, cute, and “easy” haircut BUT I was sorely mistaken. I really tried to grow into loving it but the chemistry just wasn’t there this time. When I cut my hair in grad school, I was a different person and that version of Krystal rocked the short look with absolute confidence. It might have helped that I was also a few pounds lighter. After growing weary of looking at myself in the morning and of threatening to become a legit hermit instead of taking the time to do my hair in order to face the plethora of social outings that creep onto my calendar (not bragging, just telling the truth) I made the decision to invest in my hair by purchasing more hair. I ventured back into the world of braids after quite the hiatus (sophomore year of high school). I needed something easy, flexible, and since it is the summer something that would make it possible for me to actually enjoy the pool and not run screaming from water like I’m Gizmo, the Gremlin.

Now, I’m not a woman that has accepted the act of “going natural”. It still makes me a bit anxious, although I know that the concoction used to “relax” my hair is actually stressful and is doing nothing but damaging my hair and my scalp. Watch Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair” to learn more about what he calls “the creamy crack”. My real hair is currently quite unhealthy and the braids are providing it with a nice all expenses paid summer vacation.

I have micro braids and they took 11 hours. I used 3 bags of human hair 1B silky straight. Sometimes there were three women braiding my hair at one time. It hurt and I was exhausted by the end of my session but it was so worth it because these last few weeks have been absolute heaven. My prep time in the morning has been decreased by 30 minutes. I can do things with my hair that I could not do before–I actually went to the pool twice this weekend without hesitation. I can go to the gym without worrying about whether I’m going to have enough time to do my hair before I go to work. New hair also makes your clothes look new. I haven’t shopped because with the hair all my ensembles seem to have a fresh edge. I am actually unrecognizable to some people as my friends totally looked past me at church. I had to smile and wave for them to even know it was me.

I have been asked the following questions:
1. How long did that take? (11 hours) How did you sit there for that long? ( I read, slept, watched a couple lifetime movies, and had some conversations.)
2. Did your mom do your hair? (Uh, no. What?! I went to an African Hair Braiding Salon)
3. Wait, how did your hair grow that fast? (Really? I’m not a Chia Pet–it’s fake! )
4. Did your scalp bleed? (No, but it was sore.)
5. How long can your hair stay like that? (3-4 months)
6. Could I do that to my hair? (the answer depends on who asks the question)
7. Can I touch your hair? (Grr…I am not an animal at a petting zoo.)

Can someone please tell me the deal with wanting to touch African/African American hair?

All in all, I’ve had a great reception even from people who I never thought would compliment my mane. Hair is political and can lead to incredibly heated conversations. There are people who do not believe that my hair is professional, there are people who think that every woman should wear their natural hair texture and don’t understand why women still chemically straighten their hair, there are women who are horrified at the thought of wearing their kinky/curly all natural hair, there are people who still believe in the notion of “good hair”, and there are people who purchase hair and choose their own adventure without hesitation. Hair can be a topic that serves as a catalyst for larger race based conversations. I spoke with my 1st year hall mates a lot in college about the differences in our hair and I got a great laugh out of my suite mate who used my hair products (after being told not to) and the disastrous results. This building block led to deeper issues about race on our campus and even though sometimes those encounters can be exhausting they are often needed.

Funny how the grass is always greener on the other side. My white girlfriends always say “If I had your hair, I would wear an afro.” Meanwhile, tons of African American women are in the hair salon forcing their hair to be stick straight. The cultural norms that society has defined pushes people towards one end of the continuum or the other. I must confess that I was a bit worried about what “the bosses” would think of my hair. I work at a pretty conservative, private, and privileged institution in the south. I know the students will love it because they are cool like that, but I was a bit worried about some of my superiors. To my delight, I haven’t had any issues. In fact, they really like it.

I haven’t worn weave since my first year of college when I realized that my then boyfriend had never really seen what I looked like because I’d been wearing fake hair since we met each other. I was proud of myself for wearing my real hair and I was good with that until it started breaking off and there were crazy split ins, heat damage, and at home relaxers gone bad. I needed to not care so much anymore and braids were the answer to my prayer.

I must say that I feel more attractive. I feel more confident. I’m not worried about my hair all times of the day or night. I know that appearance certainly isn’t everything, but we’ve got to be realistic in understanding the role it plays in our everyday existence. My new hair has brought a new energy to my everyday that I desperately need right now.

Hair can be changed so easily. I have a friend whose hair is a different color every time I see her. I have another friend who loves wigs and switches them up depending on her mood. I also have a friend whose hair has been the exact same for over 15 years. Hair is so personal and since I don’t subscribe to the traditional professional way of dress for work–I don’t do oppressive business suits. I work with 18-22 year olds. My goal is to look classy, be comfortable, approachable, and perhaps have their parents think that I’m not a sophomore in college while adhering to my style. I also need to act on the same philosophy with my hair.

Tell me about your hair journey. Any fun adventures?

Check out my Me, In Real Life page to see various photos of my glorious mane of hair throughout the past few years of my life.

Here’s what’s on my fun summer list right now:

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I.–I fought it but I can’t help but move to it as soon as it pops up on my Spotify.
Cruise (Remix) by Florida Georgia Line and Nelly–It’s just pure fun.
Tonight I’m Getting Over You by Carly Rae Jepsen–Yes, the Call Me Maybe girl
My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark (Light Em Up) by Fallout Boy
Done by The Band Perry
Heart Attack by Demi Lovato
I Love It by Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX
Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore and Ray Lewis feat. John Legend
Next to Me by Emeli Sande`

I’m also pretty obsessed with Lady Antebellum’s new album Golden and One Republic’s new album Native.

In the next few weeks, I’m seeing Humming House (I’ve heard great things) and of course some girl named BEYONCE is coming to town ;). I’ve got to get some more shows on my agenda.

Give your ears some lovin’ and let me know what you’re listening to this summer.

Nashville 4 Free

Confession: I’ve been feeling a little blah lately. I’m good at not falling prey to everyone’s highlight reel but I can’t help but wonder if certain things will happen for me in my life or if I’ll ever understand how to make those things happen. I know that I live a blessed life but we all wonder sometimes, don’t we?

Post dinner Friday night, I came home and blogged. I fell asleep with intentions of doing absolutely nothing the entire weekend. When I feel this way, I hibernate. However, I guess God had a different plan because I popped up at 7am on Saturday morning. After as much defiant laying as I could muster I ventured to the gym and then because it was such a beautiful day I made my may to the pool while reading my new book club selection, Wife 22.

I decided to go through my email and I found the world famous “Work Life Balance” sent out by one of my colleagues. It pretty much chronicles all Nashville happenings. Basically, if you want to know what to do in the city then you should get on this distribution list. I wasn’t in the mood to spend money so I scanned through and thought, “What could I do for free?” This got me thinking about possibly adding a feature to the blog called “Nashville 4 Free”. I don’t have buckets of disposable income so being able to do things for free or at a very minimum cost is super important. Luckily, I live in Nashville and there are actually free things going on all the time especially during the summer. I made a plan and then got myself ready for my “free” day. If I’m going to get out of this funk then I’ve got to be active and not be a sloth.

Day 1

Musicians’ Corner in Centennial Park featuring Westbound Rangers, Striking Matches, Skyline Hotel, Jess Bostic, and a couple other artists on the acoustic stage. On Saturdays from 2-5pm for the rest of June you can hear FREE music in the park. All I needed was a lawn chair (sit under one of the big shady trees) and I took my Baggu filled with other desirable items like a bottle of water, blanket, and sunscreen. Food trucks, a beer garden, and music are all a part of this event. I’d never heard of any of the musical acts before but left a huge fan of Westbound Rangers and Striking Matches. I also enjoyed the blueberry and lemonade shaved ice from Blue Monkey Shaved Ice that I indulged in for a hot weather treat. So many people and so many cute dogs. Centennial Park is beautiful and you can take a look at the lovely Parthenon and feed the ducks while you’re there. Planning on going back next Saturday to see Ben Sollee, Mat Giraud, and Humming House. Cost:$4.00

Belcourt Theatre Saturday Outdoor Cinema: Batman at Sunset
Now, this was a bit of a disappointment simply because the ’89 version was advertised but they ended up showing the original Batman, like black and white with super racist attitudes towards Asians and Asian Americans. Some of the dialogue actually led to people making audible comments of discomfort. However, I’m sure when you show up and see the movie you expect to see then it has the potential of being a grand time. Food trucks (a staple of any event), beautiful weather, a free movie, and once again all you need is a chair or blanket (you’re sitting on gravel so I would bring a chair). I would also bring a cardigan in case of chill. Cost: $0.00

I’m excited to continue this adventure. It just made me think about all of the money I spend on fun when I have the great fortune to live in a city that creates affordable options for folks like me.

Oh, and I took this really good selfie. Cost: PRICELESS

Jessica from DahliaLynn and Jessica from Here & Now have jumpstarted a new blogger adventure called BlogNashville. BlogNashville is a community for Nashville’s fashion and lifestyle bloggers.

Our first event, H&Margaritas was a grand time. We began the night at Chuy’s for delicious margaritas and then walked a few paces over to the grand opening of H&M in Opry Mills.

These ladies are not only quality bloggers but they are quality people. Laughter and chatter were a key component of the night. I’m not a hardcore blogger. I do this for cathartic purposes and to chronicle my life’s adventures. I have never set out to make money on this blog or to become famous. However, for those ladies that are able to do so, I give you much respect and I’m a fan. I have a lot to learn from these ladies as they are creative, strategic, and dedicated to the art of blogging. I’m happy to have spent time with them and I look forward to more events.

I think you’ll love their blogs.

Week in Review

Man, this week has been something else!

Despite some unpleasant moments, I have been able to take a deep breath and think about all of the good.

– Lunch with Jessica Reasons at Taco Mamacita. Check out her blog, DahliaLynn.
– First BlogNashville event: H&Margaritas with a lovely group of ladies who are intense bloggers. I have so much to learn.
– Lunch at Bosco’s with my lovely sorority sister and Tri Delta Nashville Alumnae President, Elizabeth.
– One of my favorite people, Royce, was in town recruiting fresh new talent and I was able to release him from the Opryland Hotel and take him for a real drink at The Patterson House and then a driving tour of Nashville. Love this kid!
– Surprise cupcakes from The Cupcake Collection. My mouth is still watering. YUM! Love great colleagues.
– My faves are still on The Voice. Sasha Allen and Michelle Chamuel–who are you rooting for?
– Great lunch with a colleague at West End Cafe. Get the Strawberry Fields Salad.
– Return to the elliptical machine and squats. Sore much?
– The voice of a great friend as he slayed it on a phone interview. I mean, he’s amazing and I’m so proud to know him. I love people who bring their A Game ALL THE DANG TIME!
– Fresh office supplies. There is nothing like a new pack of Pentel R.S.V.P pens, a rubber band ball, and a can of compressed air to clean my keyboard. Call me a nerd. No really, it is totally fine.
Kairos at Brentwood Baptist Church. The message, the worship, the nice people–I dig it.
– Messages from sweet people and Happy Hours as a result of those messages.
– I can cross Etch off my restaurant list. Been there and felt decent about it. Had the Pork Tenderloin–try it.

All in all, ’twas a blessed week.

talk about your joys

Hope you had a great one and if it didn’t appear to be great on the surface then take a deep breath and really think about those small moments that made you smile. We let the bad overshadow our world and we’ve got to learn to focus on the light.

I Love Nashville Nouns

I haven’t posted anything in this series for a while.

Don’t worry! I still love Nashville 🙂 I mean, who doesn’t these days? Check out this article.

I decided to post about a place that is near and dear to my heart since I spend 5 days out of my week from around 9-5 camped out in this exclusive locale.

It’s my office! When I found out that I was getting a new office, I decided to style it up and make it mirror my sparkling personality ;). I’m blessed to have an office and not live in cubicle land. To be honest, I have decorated my office better than I’ve decorated my apartment. Eek! I know, I know, I’m working on it :/.

Check out the images of some of my favorite office bits.

For these items visit the following sites:

Design Darling for the lovely monogrammed business card holder and pencil cup not to mention all of the other goodies you can purchase from this beautifully stocked boutique
Anthropologie for the fun pencils
Etsy for the Monogrammed Mason Jar
Always scope out TJ Maxx for office goodies.

Hope you liked a little visit to my work home. I figure if I’m going to be there for such a large percentage of my life then I better like the place. I work with college students so it also needs to feel welcoming, comfortable, and fun. Oh, the paint color is called “Spicy Hue”.

Tell me about your office.

Happy Summer! With all of the amazing things that come with summer including hot weather, pool time, grilling, intense patio sits, and pretty summer dresses just to name a few, we also get the unpredictable summer TV schedule.

Though there is so much to do all year long, every once in a while I need a good couch sit in front of my TV or my laptop.

Must Watch List:
Scandal, Law & Order: SVU,Suits,
Psych,Revenge ,Modern Family ,Nashville,SMASH,Family guy ,
Parks & Recreation,The Office ,New Girl ,The Mindy Project,The Daily Show/ Colbert Report

scandal

nashville

I also have a mixed bag of reality TV shows that I enjoy including:
The Voice ,Fashion Star,Project Runway,The Bachelor/Bachelorette ,Ink Master (yeah, I enjoy a tattoo show–judge much?), Bravo, and VH1

fashion star

I’m not home for most of these shows and I also don’t pay for DVR so I subscribe to Hulu+ and I catch everything I love when I have the time to sloth around.

The summer has not presented me with many awesome options just yet. So far, I have watched The Bachelorette which is a major snoozefest thus far. The Voice is down to the Top 5 (#TeamSasha & #TeamMichelle), I tried to watch Mistresses but give me a break–ew no! I broke my Kardashian addiction about a year ago (Thank you Jesus). Motive on ABC is pretty decent. I decided to cancel my Hulu+ subscription for the summer and have decided to read more books and keep myself preoccupied with other tasks.

I watch TV to escape. Sometimes, I just don’t want to think and if I do have to think to keep up with the show (Scandal) then at least I’m not thinking about my actual life. 30-120 minutes of escapism is sometimes just what I need. The emotions elicited by TV shows can be quite powerful. You’ll totally catch me crying and belly laughing as the writers hoped. I’ll never be one of those people that removes TV completely from my home but I am looking forward to the challenge of watching less. Specifically, I must cut back on the reality TV because it only leads to relative deprivation, schadenfreude, and idolizing of people who don’t really have “talent”. I can’t bear seeing more women claw their way to a renewed contract, tacky fashion line, and a book deal.

What do you like to watch?

On Friday, I’m in Love.

Here are seven things that are making me very happy these days:

1. Baggu for J.Crew — These adorable bags can carry up to 50 lbs. and the same amount of items as 3 grocery bags. It is guaranteed for a year. This bag was clutch for my Steeplechase survival kit and it matched my hat.

2. J. Crew Nautical Coasters — I am getting a “new to me” desk very soon and I want to make sure to not create any stains on the surface. I was in search of cute coasters and stumbled upon these while perusing J.Crew. Nautical designs always makes me feel like I’m on vacation and I certainly need that feeling at work.

3. Design Darling –This blog is adorable just like the creator, Mackenzie Horan. Horan not only authors the blog but she’s also the owner of a cute online boutique. I recently just purchased some monogrammed desk beauties and I’m super satisfied with her work and her customer service. My 101 in 1,001 list is inspired by her.

4. Inc. –In my ever present desire to develop myself as a professional, I often peruse Inc. for ideas, current trends, and general advice. Follow Inc. on Twitter (@Inc) for quick articles that will help you rethink your work.

5. Hybrid Her –Fashion for a cause. Hybrid Her has an amazing story and is all about the empowerment of women. I recently attended a trunk show benefitting Girls on the Run Nashville and picked up these adorable chevron bracelets and also grabbed a pair in polka dot.

6. Hunter Dixon by Hunter Bell –Do you watch Fashion Star? I could have bet my life savings on Hunter Bell winning the whole shebang. She’s mega talented and on top of that an absolute beauty. I dig her style. I enjoy supporting female entrepreneurs and she shared her story in an authentic way with the viewers. Congrats to Hunter on her win. I’m also a shameless fan of her mentor, Jessica Simpson. Now check out her clothes!

7. Paper Source — I enjoy a good greeting card. This place is a drug. I usually just go in for one card and I leave with entire sets of stationery, notepads, gifts for friends, and enough greeting cards for three families. Hopefully, you have one in your area. I needed Octopus based items recently and lo and behold Paper Source has a plethora of goodies for me to choose from.

Enjoy!

Later Y’all.

STEEPLECHASE 2013!

I attended my 2nd Steeplechase this past weekend and it was quite the adventure.

Here is what is needed to have a great time at Steeplechase:

1. Great weather.
2. Yummy food.
3. Festive beverages, especially a good mint julep.
4. A fun dress.
5. A ridiculous hat.
6. Really fun people. The more people you know, the more fun the event will be because you’ll have multiple tents to visit. Also, you might just want to be okay with having fun with strangers.
7. An agnostic opinion about Port-a-Potties–they are the only game in town.
8. A phone or camera to capture the fun moments.
9. The ability to walk from the car to the field and back.
10. An interest in horses really isn’t necessary but it is fun to see them run by your plot.

*These two things are also quite important: a sense of humor and a designated driver.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It seems like most of Nashville is at this event. The colors of clothing and the fascinating hats are pure eye candy. I came home with 3 new koozies, a bag from Vineyard Vines, and some new lip gloss. People capitalize on their Southern and as they boast about which SEC school is the best and challenge each other to games of cornhole. “We went to college together.”, “She’s my sorority sister.” “I know her from The League.” “Where are you from? Well, that isn’t really the South.” Seersucker and bow ties are king while the ladies wear their finest sundresses and go to great lengths to style their hat just so. There is nothing but privilege oozing from the pores of this event.

Drinking at 9am leads to even the strongest fading by 4pm and all you want to do is go home, get in your bed, and sleep until your body won’t allow you to any longer. Fortunately, this is all for a good cause as proceeds go to Monroe Carrell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

You’re in a field and you’re taking it all in while laughing, drinking, and eating. You look great and life is pretty awesome. You forget about reality and get soaked into this horse race that is an excuse for decadence and in some cases debauchery. I love it. If you’ve never been to Foxfields, Carolina Cup, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, or Steeplechase then what are you waiting for? I’ll see you on the 2nd Saturday in May at Steeplechase 2014.
